Getting started

High Grade Photos

Photos might be the single most important part of any successful website. Even the best facilities in the perfect locations will struggle to perform well without the right kind of high quality photos to show off their best bits. Simply put, we as humans, are lazy. If we have a choice between a block of text or a photo we will almost always choose the photo. So why would you not want to take advantage of that fact?

Photo Comparisons

Below are a few examples of how photos may distort after uploading them to a website. If the photo is not of the right dimensions the site will stretch and pixelate the photo to try and make it fit with the design intended for that page. It is especially apparent if the photo is too small.

Having photos on your site that have to be manipulated to fit the viewport of your viewers device can really hurt the overall user experience.

Are you convinced yet?

Hopefully you are able to see why it is important to have good photos on your site. Not only does it add to the aesthetics but it will also show your viewers what they will be getting before arriving.

Information Retention

What you need to do

When transferring media over the internet, not just photos but other things too, we like to use a free service called wetransfer.com You can use this to easily and reliably transfer to us everything that you need on your website. If you haven’t used it before then check out our How To page.

We recommend having photos that are of at least 1200×800 pixels, this way we can ensure that no loss of quality will occur when using them in the website. Landscape photos are preferred but a few portrait photos can help to sell a particular attraction or feature sometimes so don’t hesitate to send them over too. We would prefer having too many photos rather than too few, within reason.

Finally we can not stress how important it is to correctly label your photos. This is for two reasons. The first being so that we know exactly where you intend that photo to go within the site. The second is to do with SEO. Having correctly labelled photos will allow us to get you to a higher Google search ranking.

Styled to perfection

Along with photos your site needs to follow some kind of theme, whether its a very simplistic yet stylish black & white with a pinch of colour or loud and vibrant with a wide colour palette every site needs something. Working out what goes well with what is one of the biggest design milestones that all projects will face. We’re pretty good at it but we first need to know in what direction to head.

So we have developed some tools, and borrowed some pre-made ones, to make this phase easier for you.

The Colour Picker

This handy tool allows you to quickly and easily modify 4 colours via the sliders on the left. This will help you to visualise which colours work well together and highlights those that don’t. You have complete control over these coloured boxes. You can start modifying from scratch or use one of the premade palettes on the right hand side.

Once you have the colours you desire click on the “Copy the codes to the clipboard” button below and then paste them in a new file, keep a record of that file and then send it over to us when you enquire about your new website and give us a headstart on your new design.

Unfortunately this tool is only available on a desktop or tablet currently. But we are working hard to make one for mobiles too.

Matching the font with your message

Are you a party hotel providing a place for holiday goers or more of a corporate establishment hosting businesses or somewhere inbetween? Regardless of your function the font on your site should reflect the mood you want to convey to your potential clients, not doing so may end up losing you business.

It’s been a long time since all you had to do was not use “Comic Sans” and you couldn’t go far wrong. Now there are well over 900 web safe fonts and counting, there is literally too much choice now. Thankfully, Google have created a very helpful tool to start cutting through this confusion.

Not all of these fonts will be able to be used but it will help give us a better idea of what you are looking for.

The finishing touches

We hope that you now have a better understanding of what we need to begin a project, but it doesn’t stop with fonts, colours and photos. This checklist is a good guide as to what else we will need to ensure we can create the best site for you.

  • Any Social Media accounts that you have (FB, Twitter, Instagram etc)
  • Company guidelines; what can we and can't we do on your website
  • Your company's logo, preferably in .svg or .png format
  • All functionality you want the website to have
  • All copy (text) that you want on the website
  • The page names (tabs) that you wish to have
  • Your C-panel details for your current site
